It's so wonderful when it gets cold outside and you have such a beautiful hooded scarf to fight against it!
This hooded scarf is not very difficult to knit - provided you have some experience in working cables. I worked a lot of these hooded scarfs and tried out different qualities and colours. They all looked very pretty, so just create your own custom combination!
Scarf size: length – 210cm, width – 30cm. Hood size: 72 x 84 cm To knit the hooded scarf you will need 10 balls of yarn (75% wool, 25% silk; 220m/100g); 7mm knitting needles, an auxiliary needle for the braids, 7mm crochet hook, stitch holder.
• Garter stitch: knit stitches in every row; • Plain knitting: knit stitches on the right side, purl stitches on the wrong side; • Braids: knit 16 stitches (diagrams A and B), where only right side rows are shown (use the pattern for the wrong side rows). Continue rows 1-10 vertically; • Edge stitches: knit stitches in every row.
Gauge
• 13 stitches and 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm 1 with 2 strands; • 16 stitches of the braid pattern = 7.6cm in width.
Using two strands (or fold yarn in half), cast on 52 stitches and knit the following: edge stitch, 4 garter stitches, 16 stitches braid pattern (diagram A), 10 stitches plain knitting, 16 stitches brain pattern (diagram B), 4 garter stitches, edge stitch. When the scarf is 70cm (140 rows) long, cast off 46 stitches on the right side and continue with garter stitches on the remaining 6 stitches (for the plank). After 76 rows (36 cm), transfer these stitches onto a holder.
Scarf’s left side.
Knit like the right side, but make the plank on the left; cast off 46 stitches on the wrong side and continue with garter stitches on the remaining 6 stitches. After 76 rows (36 cm) transfer these stitches onto another holder.
Hood:
Using two strands (or fold yarn in half) cast on 106 stitches and knit the following: edge stitch, 4 garter stitches, 16 stitches braid pattern (diagram A), 64 stitches plain knitting, 16 stitches braid pattern (diagram B), 4 garter stitches, edge stitch. When its height reaches 56cm (112 rows), mark the 2 central stitches with a marker and start forming the hood:
Next row of the hood formation (RS): edge stitch, 4 garter stitches, 16 stitches braid pattern (diagram A), 1 knit stitch, remove 1 stitch, 1 knit stitch and pull it through the removed stitch (decreased 1 stitch leaning to the left), then 28 stitches plain knitting, then, before the 2 central stitches make 1 left, 2 knit stitches (central stitches), make 1 left, then 28 stitches plain knitting, 2 knit stitches together, 1 knit stitch, 16 stitches braid pattern (diagram B), 4 garter stitches, edge stitch.
Next row (WS): knit according to the pattern. Repeat the formation row 7 more times in every right side row. Then knit directly by the pattern. After 18cm (36 rows), following the last formation row, knit the hood’s back side with shortened rows in the following manner: knit the right side according to the pattern until 1 stitch before the centre, turn your work with 1 yarn over and knit the wrong side row till the end. Transfer the stitches from the left side of the hood to the holder. In the next right side row, knit until 2 stitches before the turning stitch, turn your work with 1 yarn over. Next, shorten each right side row by 2 stitches once more, twice by 3 stitches, and twice by 4 stitches (always turn with 1 yarn over). Transfer stitches from the left side of the hood onto a holder.
Conclusion.
Block the parts. Connect 6 stitches from the planks on the holders using the grafting method. In the same way, connect the hood’s stitches (yarn-overs with the next stitch as 1 stitch). Sew the hood’s casting row to the plank’s long side (see the pattern). Sew together both sides of the scarf and the hood. Create 34 tassels (17 for each side of the scarf) from 9 strands – each 40cm long. Fold them in half and pull their centres with a hook through the stitches at the scarf’s lower edge, then pull the strands through the formed loops, tighten and tie the knots. Fix all the tassels evenly.
