Create a soft, decorative touch for your home or events with this crochet candle holder pattern. It fits standard tea light candles and gives a beautiful lace effect that glows softly when the candle is lit.
Materials Needed:
- DK weight cotton yarn (preferred for heat resistance)
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Small glass jar or votive candle holder (optional for added structure)
- LED tea light or real candle (use real candles only if holder is placed over glass)
Stitches Used (US Terminology):
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
Pattern Overview:
The holder starts from the center and works out in a round using a doily-style approach. Based on the diagram:
- Start with a magic ring or chain 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as dc), then work a series of dc evenly around (typically 12). Join with sl st.
- Round 2–4: Continue working in the round, increasing the number of stitches using dc and ch spaces as per the diagram.
- Round 5 and beyond: Work shells and clusters to form the scalloped edge and decorative lace structure.
Once the base is complete, work a few rows without increases to form the side of the holder, making it deep enough to contain a tea light. You may add small openwork clusters (ex: ch 1, skip 1 st) for ventilation and style.
- Spray your finished holder with starch or fabric stiffener if you’re not using a glass insert.
- For safety, use an LED candle if your crochet is not wrapped around glass.
Use Ideas:
- Wedding or dinner party decorations
- Cozy bathroom or bedroom ambiance
- Handmade gift sets (pair with soaps or bath salts)
