Beautiful Shells Blanket
This is a gorgeous and popular pattern that has been circulating around for years, written and re-written by many people, in this re-write I have used all American English crochet terminology, using “modules” of stitches to make it easier to understand the construction of the pattern.
This is a really fun and easy pattern once you get the hang of it, and it works up quickly to make a really sweet gift for a baby or just about anyone…who doesn’t love a hand made soft snugly blanket? 🙂

Now that you have your materials, it’s time to dive into the **shell stitch pattern**. Below is a step-by-step guide to get you started.
Foundation Chain
Start by chaining a multiple of **6 + 2** to reach your desired width. This ensures your shell stitch pattern works out evenly.
Example: Chain 122 (for a medium-sized throw).
Row 1: Setup Row
- In the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 single crochet (sc).
- Skip 2 chains, then work 5 double crochets (dc) in the next chain. (This forms your first shell.)
- Skip 2 chains, work 1 sc in the next chain.
- Repeat this pattern across the row: skip 2 chains, 5 dc in the next chain, skip 2 chains, 1 sc in the next.
- End with 1 sc in the last chain.
Build the Shells
- Chain 3 and turn (this counts as the first dc of the row).
- Work 2 dc in the first sc.
- Skip the next 2 dc of the previous row's shell, and in the 3rd dc of the shell, work 1 sc.
- In the next sc, work 5 dc (this forms a new shell).
- Repeat this pattern across the row: 1 sc in the center of the shell from the previous row, 5 dc in the sc.
- End with 3 dc in the last sc of the row.
Row 3 and Beyond
- Repeat Row 2 until your blanket reaches the desired length. The pattern alternates between the shells and sc, building texture and depth.
Pro Tip: Change colors every few rows to create stripes, or use variegated yarn for a subtle color gradient effect.
