Crochet Christmas Stocking

A crochet Christmas stocking can begin as flat panels, a cuff-to-toe tube, joined granny squares, or a miniature for the tree. For the quickest make with a stated time, choose Craft Fix’s mini: about 30 minutes. For the classic showpiece, start with our own free Classic Two-Panel Stocking pattern, written row by row with a chart. Match the construction and materials to the stocking you want to hang.

Before You Start: Yarn, Hook and Size
Start with the finished size and construction, then gather the materials for that exact version. A measurement across a stocking laid flat describes its width, while cuff-to-heel and heel-to-toe measurements describe different parts of the shape. The table gives a starting point for selected designs; each link below opens the designer’s free instructions. Looking for a “crochet stocking pattern free”? These written patterns were free when checked. Use the amounts as each source presents them: a supply of full balls and an estimated amount used mean different things.

Two Flat Panels, Seamed
Flat panels make the outline easy to see before you join anything, so they are the friendliest way into a first stocking. Below is our own complete pattern, written row by row with a matching chart, followed by three free designer patterns built the same way.
Free Pattern: Classic Two-Panel Christmas Stocking

This is a plain, all-single-crochet stocking with a white ribbed cuff: two identical red panels worked flat from the top of the leg down to the sole, joined with a white edging. Every row count in this pattern was checked by our pattern checker before publishing: it rebuilds each row from the written instructions below and confirms the stitch counts and the finished measurements, and the chart is drawn from the same rows. Tell us in the comments how yours turns out.
Finished size: about 16 in (41 cm) from the top of the leg to the sole, plus a 3.4 in (8.5 cm) cuff; 7.1 in (18 cm) across the leg and 10.6 in (27 cm) from heel to toe.
You'll need: #4 worsted yarn, about 200 yd (183 m) in red and 50 yd (46 m) in white (our estimate from the stitch count, so one standard skein of each is plenty); an H/8 (5 mm) hook; a yarn needle; scissors.
Gauge: 14 sc and 16 rows = 4 in (10 cm). Crochet a small swatch first: if you get more stitches than this, your stocking will come out smaller, so go up a hook size; if you get fewer, go down one.
Abbreviations (US terms): ch, chain; sc, single crochet; sl st, slip stitch; st(s), stitch(es); BLO, back loop only.
Notes: The turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Row 1 is worked right to left, so with the right side facing you the toe points to the right, as in the chart. Make both panels exactly the same: single crochet looks almost identical on both sides, so you do not need a mirrored back.
Panels (make 2, in red)
- Row 1: Ch 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (25 sts)
- Rows 2-40: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (25 sts)
- Row 41: Ch 3, turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc in each st across. (27 sts)
- Row 42: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across to last st, 2 sc in last st. (28 sts)
- Row 43: Ch 5, turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch, sc in each st across. (32 sts)
- Row 44: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across to last st, 2 sc in last st. (33 sts)
- Row 45: Ch 3, turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, sc in each st across. (35 sts)
- Row 46: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across to last st, 2 sc in last st. (36 sts)
- Row 47: Ch 2, turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across. (37 sts)
- Rows 48-58: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (37 sts)
- Row 59: Turn. Sl st in first 2 sts, ch 1, sc in same st as last sl st and in each st across to last st; leave it unworked. (35 sts)
- Row 60: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across to last st; leave it unworked. (34 sts)
- Row 61: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across to last st; leave it unworked. (33 sts)
- Row 62: Turn. Sl st in first 2 sts, ch 1, sc in same st as last sl st and in each st across to last st; leave it unworked. (31 sts)
- Row 63: Turn. Sl st in first 3 sts, ch 1, sc in same st as last sl st and in each st across to last st; leave it unworked. (28 sts)
- Row 64: Turn. Sl st in first 2 sts, ch 1, sc in same st as last sl st and in each st across to last st; leave it unworked. (26 sts)
Fasten off after Row 64. Each panel has 1822 stitches in total.

Joining (in white)
- Hold the two panels together with all edges matching.
- Join white with a sl st at the top corner on the toe side, working through both layers.
- Sc evenly down the front edge, around the foot and up the back edge: 1 sc in each row end along the sides, 1 sc in each st along the toe and sole, and 3 sc in each sharp corner.
- Leave the top edge open. Fasten off.

Cuff (in white)
- Row 1: Ch 13. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (12 sts)
- Rows 2-57: Ch 1, turn. Sc in BLO of each st across. (12 sts)
- Fold the strip so Row 1 meets Row 57 and sl st them together to form a ring. At gauge, the ring measures about 14.3 in (36 cm), the same as the stocking opening.
- Slip the ring over the top of the stocking with its seam at the heel side, and sew the lower edge of the cuff to the top edge of the stocking. Fold the cuff down if you prefer.
Hanging loop (in white): Ch 20. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (19 sl st). Fold in half and sew both ends securely inside the cuff at the heel side.

Finishing: Weave in all ends. Steam or wet-block lightly, pressing the heel and toe curves into shape.

Vintage Icicle Stocking

Carol Hladik’s classic red stocking is built from flat single crochet panels, like ours, then finished with a white icicle trim worked in long single crochet stitches. The source describes the project as beginner-friendly. At 15.5 in (39.4 cm) tall and 12.5 in (31.8 cm) across its widest point, it is a little shorter and broader than our pattern, and the icicle cuff makes it the more decorative choice of the two.
You'll need: #4 worsted Red Heart Super Saver, 250 yd (229 m) red and 50 yd (46 m) white; G/6 (4 mm) hook and a large yarn needle.

Andy’s Cabled Stocking

Raised cables give Andy’s Stocking its sweater-like character. Bernadette uses mirrored flat panels, making the front and back separately before joining them. The standard version stands 15 in (38.1 cm) tall, with a leg 5.5 in (14 cm) wide and a foot 9.5 in (24.1 cm) wide. The page also supplies a larger version, which is the size shown in the photographs. Choose this one when working post stitches and following cable crossings sounds like a satisfying holiday project. The source gives the stitches and construction rather than a formal skill rating.
You'll need: For the standard size, #4 worsted yarn: about 158 yd (144 m) main color and 63 yd (58 m) contrast; H/8 (5 mm) hook.

Velvet and Fur Stocking

A soft lavender body and fluffy white cuff make Tamara Kelly’s stocking feel especially festive. It still begins with flat pieces: alternating sc and hdc rows form the panels, which receive edging before they are joined. The fur topper is added around the opening afterward. Finished measurements are 16 in (40.6 cm) maximum length, 6.25 in (15.9 cm) across the leg, and 10 in (25.4 cm) across the foot. Choose it for texture rather than intricate colorwork. Moogly describes the yarns as challenging to handle and supplies detailed help; a formal skill level is unstated.
You'll need: #4 worsted Bernat Baby Velvet, 175 yd (160 m), plus #5 bulky Red Heart Hygge Fur, 75 yd (69 m); H/8 (5 mm) hook.

Worked in the Round, Cuff to Toe
These stockings begin at the cuff and grow downward into the leg and foot. Their heels still introduce row work, so the construction is more varied than simply crocheting a tube. Choose a graphic forest, a traditional geometric motif, or broad stripes according to how much colorwork you want on your hook.
Wintertime Forest Stocking

A band of evergreen silhouettes turns the upper leg of this stocking into a winter scene. Sarah’s intermediate design travels from cuff to toe, using post stitches and back-loop single crochet, with the heel flap worked separately in rows as part of the construction. The finished stocking measures 23 in (58.4 cm) long by 7.5 in (19.1 cm) wide laid flat. Choose it when you want colorwork to be the main event.
You'll need: #4 worsted Lion Brand Heartland: 1 ball per color, 251 yd (230 m) per ball, in Grand Canyon and Cuyahoga Valley; H/8 (5 mm) hook.

Comfort and Joy Stocking

Comfort and Joy concentrates its colorwork in the decorative upper section, followed by a simpler lower stocking. Sarah provides a choice of charts, so you can follow the motif that appeals to you. The intermediate pattern begins at the cuff, works in rounds, and switches to rows for the heel. Its flat measurements are 20 in (50.8 cm) long by 7.5 in (19.1 cm) wide. Choose it if reading a color chart is already comfortable.
You'll need: #4 worsted Lion Brand Heartland: 1 ball per color, 251 yd (230 m) per ball, in Redwood or Joshua Tree plus Grand Canyon; J/10 (6 mm) hook.

Chunky Striped Stocking

Broad stripes and a generous folded cuff give Lindsey Roe’s stocking a relaxed, oversized look. This beginner pattern starts with ribbed hdc rows worked through the third loop. After the cuff closes into a tube, the leg and foot continue in joined rounds; the sc heel is shaped in rows and seamed. The stocking stands 21 in (53.3 cm) tall and measures 8 in (20.3 cm) across the cuff laid flat. Choose it when you want a substantial stocking with simple stitches. Follow the source’s contrast-color placement through the heel and toe for the pictured finish.
You'll need: #6 super bulky Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick: a full 223 yd (204 m) ball of cuff/heel/toe color, plus about 180 yd (165 m) contrast yarn; L/11 (8 mm) hook.

Granny Square Stockings
A granny square stocking brings the pleasure of making motifs into holiday decorating. Here the arrangement and joins create the stocking shape, so the assembly photographs matter as much as the square instructions. Continue that patchwork mood elsewhere with these free Christmas blanket patterns.
Classic Holiday Granny Stocking

Red centers, green accents, and white outer rounds give Jennifer’s stocking the look of a holiday patchwork quilt. The shape uses 15 granny squares and a granny triangle, joined into a stocking rather than worked as a continuous tube. It finishes at 17 in (43.2 cm) tall, with a leg 5 in (12.7 cm) across and a heel-to-toe measurement of 10 in (25.4 cm). Choose it if you enjoy assembling motifs. The page supplies written assembly directions and a video, while leaving the formal skill rating unstated.
You'll need: #4 worsted yarn, 190 yd (174 m), in red, green, and white; H/8 (5 mm) hook, yarn needle, and scissors.

Jewel-Tone Granny Square Stocking

Marly Bird’s version brings a lively palette to the mantel: purple centers and seams frame gray and turquoise granny rounds. The adventurous-beginner pattern uses 13 motifs, then finishes the opening with post-stitch ribbing and a hanging loop. The stocking measures about 13.5 in (34.3 cm) from cuff to heel, with 7.5 in (19.1 cm) from heel to toe. Choose it for a family member who loves color beyond the usual Christmas shades. An optional tassel echoes the square colors.
You'll need: #3 light/DK WeCrochet Swish DK: 1 ball each of Throne, Cobblestone Heather, and Wonderland Heather, 123 yd (112 m) per ball; H/8 (5 mm) hook.

Vintage Granny Stocking With a Triangle Heel

Julie’s updated stocking keeps the red, white, and green charm of a family heirloom while giving the heel its own triangular motif. The construction uses granny-square strips, shaping the toe and heel before the sections become a stocking. Finished size is 20 in (50.8 cm) long by 5.5 in (14 cm) wide, excluding the hanging loop. Choose it if you enjoy following assembly photographs as much as crocheting the squares. The page explains several joining methods and offers plain sc or dc finishing at the top. A formal difficulty rating is unstated.
You'll need: #4 worsted yarn, 175 yd (160 m) combined, in white, red, and green; I/9 (5.5 mm) hook and a blunt yarn needle.

Mini Stockings for the Tree and Gift Cards
A mini crochet stocking gives the same holiday shape a smaller job: a tree ornament, gift topper, or tiny gift pocket. The Country Cottage design specifically includes gift-card use; the other minis are presented as decorations or toppers. Let that intended use guide your choice. Pair a miniature with these Christmas ornaments for your tree when you want a coordinated handmade display.
Quick Striped Mini Stocking

Janine’s mini is the quickest stocking here with a published time estimate: about 30 minutes. The beginner design works downward in a spiral, using sc increases and decreases to shape the foot, then gathers the remaining opening closed. With DK yarn it stands about 4 in (10 cm) tall before the optional fluffy cuff. Choose a red-and-cream stripe for a tiny traditional stocking, or follow the red, green, and cream sample for a brighter tree decoration.
You'll need: A small amount of #3 light/DK or #2 sport yarn; D/3 (3 mm), as labeled by the source. Optional fluffy cuff: white textured yarn and approximately E/4 (3.5 mm) hook.

Mini Country Cottage Stocking

This little red stocking packs raised texture into a very small space. Ali’s easy/advanced-beginner design starts at the toe, uses joined rounds through the body, and works the heel and ribbed cuff in rows. Front post double crochet supplies the texture, while the white toe, heel, and cuff frame the red center. At 5 in (12.7 cm) by 2.5 in (6.4 cm), it is the source’s option for tree ornaments, gift cards, treats, or a finishing touch on wrapped presents. Choose it when the tiny details are as appealing as the gift tucked inside.
You'll need: #4 worsted yarn: 20 yd (18 m) body color and 10 yd (9 m) toe/heel/cuff color; H/8 (5 mm) hook.

Simple Ribbed-Cuff Mini Stocking

Amanda Saladin’s all-red mini keeps the finishing quiet, letting the ribbed cuff and familiar sock shape do the work. The stocking begins with back-loop sc ribbing in rows, joins that cuff into a ring, and continues downward in continuous sc rounds. Heel rows create the bend before the foot and toe are completed. It stands about 6 in (15.2 cm) tall with the cuff rolled down. The introduction calls these stockings easy. Amanda presents it as a tree decoration or gift topper.
You'll need: A small amount of #4 worsted yarn, shown in Lion Brand Wool-Ease; H/8 (5 mm) hook, yarn needle, and locking stitch marker.
Free pattern by Amanda Saladin, love. life. yarn.
Names, Cuffs and Hanging
For lettering, Moogly suggests its crochet alphabet worked in thread or fine yarn, or traditional embroidery, on the Velvet and Fur Stocking. That design includes an optional hanging tab sewn inside where the cuff meets the body. Its fluffy topper uses the fur yarn around the opening; the source notes that Red Heart Hygge Fur is discontinued and suggests Bernat Pipsqueak as a substitute. Keep that substitution in mind when shopping for the pictured finish.
Lindsey’s chunky stocking offers another way to make the finish personal: add a name tag, embroidered initial, tassel, or pom-pom. Its hanging cord passes through the folded cuff, with the yarn tails secured inside. The source describes room for gifts, but gives no numerical weight limit for the fillers.
Next step: Dress the mantel with crochet chains for Christmas, then add crochet stars to carry the handmade theme onto the wall.
